What to Know

  • A 2-year-old boy died Monday evening at a Westchester hospital after his mother returned home from work and found him unconscious

The father of a 2-year-old boy whose mother found him unresponsive in his Westchester County home has been arrested in the child's death, officials said.

Authorities said Lloyd Scott, 34, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of the child at a home in Mount Vernon Monday night. It comes a day after the man left the hospital where the boy was pronounced dead.

"This toddler was taken away at the hands of someone he trusted," said Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, who teared up at a news conference announcing the arrest Tuesday night.

Mount Vernon authorities did not elaborate further on the case Tuesday evening, but said police hadn't had any domestic calls to the home previously.

The development comes hours after sources told News 4 the boy's death was being treated as a homicide. The sources didn't elaborate on the reasoning; it wasn't clear if the child had obvious signs of bodily trauma. An autopsy was to be conducted, though the timing of that assessment wasn't immediately clear.

A Mount Vernon official said the boy's mother got home from work Monday evening to find her child unconscious. He was taken to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It's not clear how the child died, but the official said the father had been watching the boy and told the mother to tell detectives he was being watched by someone else before leaving. Both the mother and father had gone to the hospital.

Attorney information for Scott wasn't immediately available.
