The Q is the best of lines, and the C is the worst of lines, according to the annual Straphangers Campaign "State of the Subways" report card.
It was the first time since 2001 that the Q grabbed the number-one spot, with high ratings on announcements, delays caused by breakdowns, seat availability at rush hours and subway-car cleanliness, Straphangers said.
The C was the lowest-ranked train for the fourth straight year, though it did perform above average in service regularity and the availability of seats, the report said.
"While we appreciate the positive results of the Straphangers' latest survey, those results do not tell the full story," Kevin Ortiz, an MTA spokesman, said in a statement. Ortiz cited improvements including countdown clocks, major construction programs and 300 new subway cars on order for lettered-line routes -- some of which will replace C cars, the oldest in use.
Among the other findings of the report, which the Straphangers Campaign has issued since 1997:
-- Riders on the R had the best chance of finding a seat at rush hour -- 71 percent -- while riders on the No. 5 only had a 23 percent chance of doing so.
-- The No. 1 was the cleanest line, and the C the dirtiest.
