An investigation by the state comptroller's office has found safety hazards including toxic cleaning supplies and missing window guards at some New York City prekindergarten programs.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Friday that the hazards his office found "need to be fixed immediately."
The comptroller's office audited 33 city-funded pre-K programs. Fifteen were in public schools, 11 were in community-based organizations and seven were in private or religious schools.
The auditors found health and safety problems at all three types of program.
The hazards included peeling paint, radiators without protective guards and toxic cleaning products like bleach that were accessible to children.
City Department of Education spokesman Will Mantell said in a statement that pre-K programs are required to swiftly address any health and safety issues identified during frequent site visits.
