18 Firefighters Hurt as 5-Alarm Fire Rips Through Staten Island Homes

18 firefighters were hurt as a fire burned through multiple homes on Staten Island. Rana Novini reports.

A multi-alarm fire tore through homes on Staten Island Monday afternoon.

More than 100 firefighters attacked the blaze that broke out at a home on Rensselaer Avenue near Foster Road and Marcy Avenue and quickly spread to adjoining row houses amid gusty conditions.

At 4 p.m. the fire was on five alarms. Chopper 4 was over the scene where smoke could be seen pouring from blackened rooftops as fire crews used multiple high-pressure hoses to douse the flames.

By 4:30 p.m. the fire seemed to be under control.

FDNY said 18 firefighters had minor injuries from the blaze. One civilian also suffered smoke inhalation.
