The MetroCard is sticking around just a while longer.
Authorities say the MetroCard will not be phased out until 2022, NBC 4 New York has confirmed.
The MTA initially said riders would be able to pay for subway rides by using smartphones or credit cards with chips by 2016 or 2017, but decided to push back the new technology after significant glitches were reported in other cities with the new system.
The MTA is set to vote this week on fare hikes, which could potentially take effect in March.
