Homeless Man Charged With Hate Crime After Damaging Church Statues: NYPD

A homeless man is facing hate crime charges after he damaged several church statues in Manhattan last month, police say.

The NYPD says in the early morning hours of June 26, a man, allegedly David Hedeen, jumped over a fence at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in SoHo and threw three status at a large statue of the Virgin Mary.

All four of the statues were damaged, police said.

Video from the scene that June morning shows a man picking up the statues and hurling them.

Hedeen, 40, is charged with a hate crime and criminal mischief, according to officials.
