Charges Upgraded for Long Island Man Accused of Setting Girlfriend on Fire

A Long Island man has been arraigned on an upgraded attempted murder charge for setting his girlfriend on fire, authorities say.

Ryan Osborne, 30, from Calverton, is being held without bail. Suffolk County prosecutors say the man attempted to kill his girlfriend on May 17 by pouring a flammable liquid on the tent she was living in and setting it on fire.

Newsday reports the 33-year-old victim survived the attack and was able to identify Osborne. She received treatment at a local hospital.

The tent fire spread to surrounding foliage and caused a brush fire, which was extinguished by local firefighters.

The victim had previously filed a restraining order against Osborne in January 2016.
