Jobless Postal Worker Accused of Burning Flag

Former postal employee is charged with criminal mischief

Bergenfield police are accusing an unemployed postal worker with burning an American flag on Veterans Day.

Terrence Byrnes is charged with criminal mischief.

Burning the flag is not a crime, but police say the 37-year-old destroyed someone else's property.

Police say Byrnes lit a bamboo shoot and ignited the tattered flag at a former auto dealership on S. Washington Avenue.

Police say Byrnes told them he felt it was 'dishonorable' to display such a weather-beaten flag.

Byrnes is scheduled to appear in Bergenfield Municipal Court on Nov. 20.
