Angry Customer Shoots, Kills Auto Sales Shop Owner in Apparent Dispute, Police Say

Police are searching for the suspect in a deadly shooting at a car dealership in West Nyack. Ida Siegal reports.

An employee at a Rockland County used car dealership has died after he was shot in an apparent dispute with a customer, police said Sunday.

Youbens Joseph, 37, of Middletown, was shot three times, Clarkstown police said. Police said he was working at Youbs Auto Sales in West Nyack on Saturday afternoon when an irate customer walked in and an argument ensued.

The customer pulled out a gun and started firing, hitting Youbens three times in the torso.

"It's something to do in regards to some kind of business transaction. We don't have too much other than that," said Clarkstown Police Det. Peter Walker. "At this point, detectives are looking around for surveillance systems in these neighboring businesses."

Joseph, who has three school-age children, was working that afternoon with his family by his side, according to his sister Widg Jean-Paul. She said the shooting happened right in front of his 6-year-old daughter. Flowers and candles were set up at the auto shop Monday in memory of Youbens.

Jean-Paul said her brother loved his kids and his family, and was "always there for everybody."

"You call him 2 in the morning, 'I'm there Zaza, I'm coming,'" she said.

Neighbors said Josephwould leave at 5 in the morning to run his auto sales shop. They called him the kindest neighbor anyone could ask for.

"You open fire, three shots to a person, I mean, come on," said neighbor Maria Ortega. "I'm stunned."

Police said the shooter, who fled in a vehicle, had a beard and was wearing a dark baseball cap and glasses.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Clarkstown Police Department at 845-639-5800.
