An 8-year-old girl was shot in the abdomen inside an apartment in the South Bronx Wednesday morning, according to the NYPD.

The girl's mother allegedly told officers a man broke into their apartment, fired a shot and ran.

The incident took place roughly around 9:30 a.m. inside the Patterson Houses.

The girl is expected to recover, police say.
