A car crashed into a Trader Joe's supermarket in Westwood, N.J. Wednesday, slamming into a supermarket worker near the shopping cart corral and sending her through a store window, police say.

The driver of the car, described by witnesses an elderly woman, was pulling out of a handicapped parking spot when she lost control and drove into the store on Irvington Street, hitting the worker, Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said.

The worker had just finished her shift and was getting a cart to do some shopping when she was hit, according to Regino.

Emergency room nurse Cindy Vakarian was shopping inside the supermarket when she "heard a crash and a scream."

"The woman's top half of her torso came through the window, and I looked over her and I saw a car right behind her, and her leg was wedged between the car and the two metal rims that keep the carts together," she said.

Vakarian said the victim's coworkers rushed to help, and brought bags of ice as they waited for paramedics.

Police said the woman was in surgery, but the extent of her injuries was not clear.

The driver of the car is said to have remained in her car until police arrived on the scene.
