Grocer Installs Bacon, Chocolate Scent Machine

A Brooklyn supermarket chain is trying to make customers' mouths water-- in the hopes they'll open up their wallets.

The New York Post reports that NetCost Market, which has stores in Brooklyn and Staten Island, has installed high-tech devices that pump in scents like "Smoky Bacon'' and "Lindt Chocolate'' at their Sheepshead Bay location.

The machines are said to be popular in Russian supermarkets. NetCost got them from a Charlotte, N.C. company called ScentAir and plans to install more soon.

A supermarket staffer tells the Post fruit sales have gone up since the machines made their debut. They've been pumping strawberry and grapefruit scents into the produce aisle.

Customer Larissa Poulter says she's glad they don't have them in the fish section.
