Wife Accused of Hiring Cabbie to Kill Husband

A woman has been charged with attempted murder after she tried to hire a New York City cab driver to kill her husband, police and prosecutors say.

Veronica Escalona is being held without bail. Her attorney had no comment. She was charged with conspiracy in the second degree after her arrest Thursday.

Escalona hired a cabbie to drive her around and spy on her estranged husband, Port Authority police say. Cops said she became convinced he was having an affair, and confided that she wanted her husband dead.

The shaken cab driver told Port Authority police, who set up a sting operation and arrested the woman after she paid $500 to an undercover officer posing as a hit man.
