The driver of the SUV and his passenger were not hurt

A 14-year-old girl is hospitalized in critical condition after she was hit by an SUV while she and a friend were trying to cross a highway on Long Island Sunday night, police said.

Natalie Maloney of Ronkonkoma was attempting to cross the four-lane Nesconset Highway at Middle Country Road when the truck hit her around 11:40 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

Police said the girl and a friend were going to meet some friends at a gas station. The pair had crossed the eastbound lanes and then Natalie darted into the westbound lanes, against the traffic light, when she was hit.

The driver of the SUV and his passenger were not hurt; the vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631 854-8452.
