New York is urging people to report the illegal sale of synthetic marijuana.
The drugs are banned in the state, but authorities have accused some stores of selling brands like K2 and Spice anyway.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Monday that the state will put up signs in subways, Thruway travel plazas and on college campuses urging anyone who sees the drugs for sale to submit the information anonymously to a state hotline at 1-888-997-2587.
The subway ads will be most prominent in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, where there have been reports of increased problems related to the drugs. The substances are designed to mimic the effects of marijuana but it often has a very different effect on the user.
