Fugitive Convicted in '04 NYC Attempted Murder, Kidnapping Caught in England

A 47-year-old fugitive wanted in the kidnapping and attempted murder of an Upper East Side woman in 2004 has been arrested by authorities in England, officials said.

Sean Lopes, a former science teacher, jumped bail after his arrest nine years ago for confronting his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend with a gun and a knife and holding her hostage in her apartment.

He was convicted in absentia in 2005 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Kent police said Wednesday that Lopes had been living in Chatham, about 33 miles east of London. Officers arrested him Monday after consulting detectives in New York.

Lopes appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court Tuesday and was remanded pending his next hearing May 14.

In early 2012, U.S. authorities said they believed Lopes was hiding in Trinidad and Tobago. He was described as a violent fugitive.
