Rats Invade NYC Playground in Broad Daylight, Neighbors Complain

Parents at a New York City playground are fed up with the rats scurrying around them in the middle of the day.

It's not clear what sparked the infestation at Clark Playground in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx in the last few months. But nearly everyone sitting in the playground Wednesday had a tale of a run-in with the rodents.

"It's just nasty, you have children running around the park," said one regular park visitor.

"Over by the benches, they come out by the benches, they go across," said Angel Malloy. "That's why nobody is sitting over there, everybody who lives here don't sit over there."

The playground is used by nearby schools, day cares and workers and residents who come to have lunch in the middle of the day.

Neighbor Martha Guzman said she called 311, and the Parks Department confirmed it received a complaint earlier this month. The department says the park will be baited for rats and inspected for several months.

In the meantime, residents are urged to properly throw away trash so that it doesn't attract rats.
