PSEG Long Island is warning customers of a scam in which some people are receiving fraudulent emails that appear to be utility bills.
The company says it's received reports of customers getting emails which request personal information that could lead to identity theft. It says it wouldn't ask its customers to provide such information online without first having them log into their accounts.
Consumer services vice president Dan Eichhorn says PSEG Long Island is taking attempts to defraud customers "very seriously" and is asking customers to be wary of emails demanding immediate payment or threatening termination of service.
Eichhorn urges customers to delete suspicious emails and call PSEG Long Island to report them. Customers shouldn't provide personal information, download attachments or click on links.
