Long Island Aquarium Debuts Adorable Otter Pups, Solicits Names

A Long Island aquarium recently welcomed four adorable river otter pups to its marine family and wants help naming the little critters.

The four North American river otters, one female and three males, were born last month at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center to proud parents Peanut Butter and Jelly.

The aquarium is launching a voting contest to name the two pups; otter lovers can vote on their favorite names through the aquarium's Facebook page until April 14.

The choices are Cayenne, Nutella, Butter, Jam, Fluff, Sage, Paprika, Rye, Basil, and Tank, and the four winning names will be announced April 15.

North American river otters are playful animals that are equally at home in water as they are on land. Members of the weasel family, river otters enjoy sliding down muddy and snowy hills, bouncing objects on their paws, playing tag and wrestling, the aquarium says.

The new river otter pups won't be part of any public exhibits until they can begin moving on their own, which can take up to five months. They generally nurse for four months.
