Mayor Bill de Blasio is leading a rally for a retirement savings program for private sector employees.
De Blasio said Thursday that most private sector workers — and particularly women and minorities — don't have retirement savings.
The city's plan would enroll employees at businesses who employ 10 or more people and don't already have a retirement program. Only employees would make contributions.
But the proposal would need federal support.
Similar proposals from other municipalities have stalled in Washington. And a move in the New York State Legislature to study the measure had previously stalled.
The rally brought together de Blasio with City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Public Advocate Letitia James and Comptroller Scott Stringer.
Though all Democrats, their joint appearances have been infrequent.
