NYC Holds Bike-Share Program Demonstration

New York City is finally rolling out its bicycle-sharing program.
 
After years of planning, city transportation officials offered the bikes for a media test run on Sunday in Brooklyn.
 
More than 9,000 people who have signed up for bike-sharing will be able to ride on May 27 -- Memorial Day, when streets are quieter. Annual membership is $95.
 
Then anyone can hop on starting June 2. All that's needed is a credit card, at $9.95 a day.
 
The sturdy, three-gear bikes will be locked up after each use at 330 city locations. 
 
Critics say the program that's been successful in cities including London, Paris and Washington takes up parking space. But supporters say sharing bikes allows people to move easily around the city without worries about theft.
