Man Struck and Killed Crossing Long Island Highway: Police

A man was killed on Saturday evening as he was crossing a highway on Long Island, police said.

Juan Mejia, 28, was struck just after 8 p.m. as he was walking north across Montauk Highway, west of Bellport Avenue in Bellport. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Suffolk County medical examiner.

The impact of the strike crippled the bumper and shattered the windshield and driver-side headlight of the 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit that hit Mejia.

The 24-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was not injured. The car was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
