Turnpike Accident Kills Horse

A multi-vehicle accident near exit 9 on the Southbound New Jersey Turnpike today killed one horse, and left another in serious condition. Four people suffered minor injuries.

The three-car accident involved a tanker truck, a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer -- carrying two horses -- and a charter bus. The collision happened sometime just after 1:30 p.m.

The backups went up 10 miles, and 2 lanes were shutdown. Drivers were getting by using the shoulder lane. Joe Orlando, spokesman for the Turnpike Authority, said drivers should expect major delays throughout the evening.

According to NJ.com, Orlando said “[officials] sedated [the second horse] to get it out of there and put it on a trailer so it wouldn’t be spooked and end up hurting itself.”
