Mother of Boy, 7, Who Had Gun at School Arraigned

53-year-old Deborah Farley was unable to make $35,000 bail

The mother of a 7-year-old Queens boy who brought a loaded gun to school in his backpack is spending the weekend in jail.

An attorney for 53-year-old Deborah Farley says she was unable to make $35,000 bail. Farley was arraigned Friday night on charges including criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

Farley's son unknowingly brought the loaded handgun to his Far Rockaway elementary school Thursday. His mother rushed to school after realizing she accidentally left the gun in his backpack.

Farley told police she purchased the gun to protect herself from people hanging around her apartment.

The school was locked down and the gun was found.

Farley's attorney, John Scarpa, says she was desperate to make sure no children were in danger.
