Yonkers Schools Superintendent's Stepson Drowns at Jersey Shore

A man who drowned over the weekend while swimming with friends at the Jersey shore was the stepson of a New York schools superintendent.

John Crimmins, of Yonkers, was swimming at Lyman Street Beach in Mantoloking at about 2:30 p.m. when his friends lost sight of him, police said. Lifeguards called police to the scene and the U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police and officers from area police departments launched an extensive search.

At about 3:08 p.m., lifeguards from the Bay Head Improvement District spotted the man in the surf at a beach area in Bay Head. The man was unresponsive and lifeguards immediately administered CPR.

He was taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Crimmins' stepfather, Yonkers Schools Superintendent Michael Yazurlo, issued a statement to the Journal News confirming his death.

"Our hearts are heavy, we will miss John," Yazurlo said.

Authorities have not released further details on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.
