Man Shot During Undercover Drug Arrest

Police say a shooting that left a man wounded in the stomach Tuesday afternoon was the result of a drug arrest gone awry.

According to police, a 23-year-old man attempted to purchase drugs from an undercover narcotics officer when the officer identified himself and began to arrest the man.

That's when a 43-year-old man tried to grab the detective from behind and place him in a chokehold. The detective struggled with the two men before firing a round from his weapon, striking the 43-year-old man in the stomach, police said.

The younger man fled into a building on Post Avenue but was later apprehended, according to police.

The 43-year-old was taken to Harlem Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The detective was treated for neck and shoulder injuries.
