Deadline to Seek Disaster Aid Nears in NJ

Time is running out for New Jersey residents and business owners seeking federal disaster aid for problems stemming from this year's severe spring floods.

Tuesday is the deadline for submitting applications to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state Office of

Emergency Management. Assistance includes grants for home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.

Fifteen of New Jersey's 21 counties _ Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer,

Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset and Union were declared federal disaster areas after torrential rains soaked the Garden State in late March.

FEMA says 11,264 people had submitted applications as of Thursday, and more than $13 million has been paid out to eligible residents.

People who sustained losses can register with FEMA by calling 800-621-FEMA or on the Web at: www.disasterassistance.gov.
