Police: Man, Woman Had 8-Year-Old Child Help in Junkyard Theft

Police on eastern Long Island say they have arrested a man and woman on theft charges — and say they enlisted the woman's 8-year-old daughter to help.

Spencer Stewart and Diana Censoprano of Selden were arrested Monday night by Riverhead town police. Officers say they observed the couple in a vehicle with its headlights off backing down a dirt road near a junkyard.

Police later determined that Censoprano's 8-year-old daughter had helped the couple rob items from the junkyard. The items included tires and rims.

The adults were charged with grand larceny, possession of stolen property and child endangerment. It was not immediately known if they have lawyers.

The girl and her 4-year-old brother were turned over to a relative. The case has been referred to child welfare authorities.
