It is indeed one to the iconic symbols of New York City. But after stretching across the East River for more than 125 years, the Brooklyn Bridge is showing its age.
That's why the New York City Department of Transportation is about to give it a major overhaul.
The bridge will be closed to Manhattan-bound traffic overnight beginning on Monday, Aug. 23rd, 2010, as the DOT performs what they called "necessary rehabilitation and repainting work."
Brooklyn-bound traffic will be maintained throughout the project as will the span’s pedestrian and cycling path, officials said.
All work will occur during off-peak hours, when Manhattan-bound motorists will be detoured to the nearby Manhattan Bridge or to other crossings, officials said.
The overnight closures, announced earlier this year, will occur as the project continues through 2014. All traffic lanes will remain open during peak hours. The $508 million project to rehabilitate the span’s ramps and approaches and paint its steel components to prevent corrosion started this spring and is funded in part with $30 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.
Closure Times:
Sunday through Friday: Closures will begin at 11 p.m. and lanes will reopen at 6 a.m.
Saturday: Closure will begin at 12:01 a.m. and the lanes will reopen at 7 a.m.
Sunday: Closure will begin at 12:01 a.m. and lanes will reopen at 9 a.m.
