‘A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder' Will End Broadway Run in January

“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” the dark comic musical in which vicious slayings are played for laughs in Edwardian England, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre on Jan. 17, 2016.

At the time of its closing, the production will have played 30 previews and nearly 1,000 performances, with its star, Jefferson Mays, “dying” nearly 6,000 deaths.

“Gentleman’s Guide” has been a rare Broadway hit. The musical had no A-list stars, nor is its source material -- a 1907 novel by Roy Horniman -- a well-known title. Its original operetta score came from Broadway novices: Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak.

Yet that didn’t stop “Gentleman's Guide” from winning four Tonys in 2014, including the night’s top prize, best musical. The production recouped its entire $7.5 million capitalization, and currently holds the house records at the Walter Kerr Theatre for highest single-week gross ($1,062,740) and total cumulative gross (nearly $60 million).

A national tour, with stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and more, will launch later this month.

In addition to Mays, “Gentleman’s Guide” currently stars Bryce Pinkham, who originated the role of Monty Navarro and was Tony-nominated for his performance.
