A Gateway to Ground Zero Coming Down

Portions of the ramp will be preserved by the museum for display at a later time.

The iconic ramp that has carried tens of thousands of people onto bedrock at, and millions of tons of material out of, Ground Zero is being dismantled.

Beginning Saturday, the 460-foot-long ramp, which has been in place since March 2002 and has played a huge role in the anniversary memorial services every year since then, will be taken apart so that construction of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum can continue.

Portions of the ramp will be preserved by the museum for display at a later time.

From here on out, workers will get into the lower levels of the site via staircases while heavy equipment and material will be lowered using cranes -- the standard practice at below-grade Manhattan building sites.
