2 Rikers Island Guards Suspended After Inmate Escapes

A man who had escaped a high-security detention center on Rikers Island, sparking a massive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies, has been found, and officials say he never left the island. Marc Santia reports.

Two Rikers Island guards have been suspended after a brief escape by an inmate.

The Daily News reported that the pair will be suspended for at least 30 days without pay.

The suspensions came after inmate Naquan Hill jumped over a fence last week at the New York City jail complex where he was serving time on burglary charges. The News said other inmates were distracting guards when the breakout occurred.

The 24-year-old Hill was caught about eight hours later having never gotten off the island.

A union official defended the two guards, saying escapes at Riker are extremely rare. Their names were not released.
