As expected, the City Planning Commission approved the Department of Sanitation facility planned for the west end of Spring Street this week, and as expected, neighbors in Hudson Square trashed the vote and vowed to fight on. The residents opposed to the massive garbage truck facility had already indicated they would sue if the plan made it past the City Planning Commission, and one group tells Downtown Express that they've already retained a lawyer who was involved in suing Exxon over the Valdez oil spill. City Planning chairperson Amanda Burden said, "The project will provide a critical service for the city and the neighborhoods it serves. It will also remove [the Department of Sanitation] from the Gansevoort Peninsula and allow it to be included in the Hudson River Park," and added that Sanitation has agreed to, in the paper's words, "monitor the queuing on West St. of trucks waiting to enter the garage." The proposal now heads to the City Council.
