Know Right Now: Simon Ekrelius

Simon Ekrelius

London-based designer Simon Ekrelius cites quasars, dark matter, metal, and Le Courbosier's Phillips Pavillion as inspiration for his Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. Such Trekkie influences could easily translate into something a tad Barbarella, but we're happy to report that there's nothing kitsch about Ekrelius' out-of-this-world collection.

Titled "Star Dust," the collection combines Old Hollywood glamour with architectural silhouettes and surreal graphic prints to create something distinctly modern and surprisingly on-trend.  Though the lookbook styling is all intergalactic fantasy, most of the separates are still sidewalk appropriate, like a black-and-white sleeveless cocktail dress, or a sheer blouse and sculpted grey skirt.  Some of the more directional pieces -- a peak shoulder romper or oversize suit jacket, for example -- may be reserved for Fashion Week sidewalk experiments.

Ekrelius insists on super luxe materials in all of his collections: For "Star Dust," he favored wool/cotton blends, silk organza, printed silk interlock and hand-dyed cotton organza.
