Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning Join JJ Abrams' “Super 8”

After five seasons of guiding the Dillon Panthers, Kyle Chandler's finally getting called up to the big time, with a role in JJ Abrams hotly anticipated alien train-wreck thriller.

Chandler and with Elle Fanning have both been cast in Abrams' "Super 8," reported Vulture. Not much else is known about the project other than what one could glean from the trailer that leaked earlier this summer,

"In 1979, the U.S. Air Force closed a section of Area 51," reads the opening of the clip, followed by, "All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio." Then we see some yahoo in a pickup spin out on some train tracks, derailing an oncoming locomotive. Amid the wreckage we see an Air Force container on its side, with something trying to pound its way out. Creepy good fun.

The film is being executive produced by Steven Spielberg and promises to evoke the great director's '70s heyday. It will no doubt start shooting soon as it's slated for a 2011 release.

This is great news for Chandler, whose career beyond the sidelines of "FNL" has been something of a disappointment, with roles in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Kingdom" and "King Kong."

Fanning, only 12, is already a screen veteran, with films like "Babel," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Astro Boy" under her belt. Later this year she can bee seen in Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere" and the absolutely bananas looking "Nutcracker on 3D."
