School Bus Cameras Help Catch Law-Breaking Drivers

Shocking video from Austin, Texas, shows a seventh grade boy being hit by a pickup truck. Luckily, the boy is alright and police were able to identify the driver who hit him because of a camera on a school bus. The new school bus cameras are already being credited with keeping other students safe in the Nebraska town of Bellevue, where a school district has 11 buses with exterior cameras. This week the Bellevue cameras caught one driver blowing through a stop sign of a bus driven by Bobbie Haith. When she noticed the driver wasn’t slowing down, she signaled for the seventh grade boy to wait. “If I would have let that kid cross he would have hit him! I’ve seen a lot of people who just don’t even care. They look you right in the eyes and go forward right through the stop sign,” Haith says. Bellevue installed their bus cameras a year ago, capturing 63 violators last school year. 40 have already been caught this school year.
