2 Men Arrested 43 Years After Girls' Murders

Mary Jane Griego was in high school when the bodies of 12-year-old Valerie Lane and 13-year-old Doris Derryberry were found near Camp Far West Lake, close to Wheatland, California. “It was horrific. It paralyzed this small community,” Griego said of the news that came on November 12, 1973. Investigators said both were killed by a shotgun at close range, and it appeared one of the girls had been raped. “For a period of time, we weren’t allowed to go anywhere because our parents were scared,” Griego said. In March 2014, Yuba County investigators reviewed the case, and evidence items collected during the investigation were reviewed and sent to the California Department of Justice Forensic Labs for analysis. Two men, William Harbour and Larry Don Patterson, were arrested Tuesday in connection with the teens’ killings.
