K9 Hero Given Memorial Service With Full Honors

For the first time in their history, a military war dog was given a memorial service with full honors Saturday afternoon at Kentucky’s Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Dozens of people came out to Camp Nelson National Cemetery to pay their respects to Ireland, a 13-year-old military war dog who served overseas on two deployments in Iraq. One of them was with her handler Joshua Sutherland, who served as a Marine. “We deployed to Camp Fallujah in Iraq,” said Sutherland. Upon their return in 2009, Ireland was medically retired and the Sutherland’s took her into their home. “There was no quit in that dog. She had more drive than five other dogs and I don’t have a bad memory of working with her,” said Sutherland.
