89-Year-Old Votes For First Time

One East Texas man is just two months shy of his 90th birthday, and he’s casting his vote for the first time in a presidential election. Clifford Sherlock, 89, of Hawkins, had never voted in a presidential election before, but that all changed on Tuesday. Sherlock, a World War II veteran, was spurred on by his good friend, John Myers. “He made mention that we was not registered to vote. Well then I found out that he never been to an election. So I thought that I could walk him through the process,” Myers said. He has voted before during local school elections, but said he wouldn’t vote again because of poll taxes and the jury duty that followed. “Six months later, they called me up for jury duty. If that is the way they’re going to get you up there and go and sit on jury duty and lose a good days of work and everything else with wages and all…I’m not going to do that,” Sherlock said. This year, Sherlock said he felt compelled to make a change and have his voice heard.
