300,000 People Celebrate Mass With Pope in Havana

Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated mass with Pope Francis at Revolution Plaza in Havana, Cuba on Sunday. Francis held a traditional Catholic mass in Spanish. Students from a local art institute sang hymns and world-class Cuban musicians played songs. In his homily, Francis spoke about service and putting others before oneself. “Cuba is a people with a taste for parties, friendship and beautiful things,” Francis said. “It marches with songs of praise. It has wounds like every other people, yet knows how to walk and hope and stand with open arms.” Although only a small percentage of Cubans identify as Catholic, many know Francis has helped mediate change and affect a better relationship with the U.S. He was scheduled to meet with Cuban President Raul Castro later in the day, and possibly former Cuban president Fidel Castro. NBC New York’s Darlene Rodriguez reports from Havana.
