Jason Jones on Putting Things His Kids Say in ‘The Detour'

Harry: “Do you put things your kids say in the show?” Jason: “Are you calling me a joke thief? Yes. Yes, I steal.” Harry: “Are they cool with it?” Jason: “No, they want residuals.” Harry: “I was thinking more in terms of, ‘Dad you’re embarrassing us,’ but they want to be paid for it.” Jason: “They want money for it. We did a piece last year based on a true story. My son, when he was younger, we were jaywalking in the city and he said, ‘Hey, the white man didn’t say go yet.’ I was like, ‘That’s not, let’s rephrase that. Let’s call him the walking man or something.’ One time he decided to take it upon himself to warn a lovely African-American couple that the white man didn’t tell them to go yet. Now is the time to make that joke. He saw that and was like, ‘Hey, I came up with that. You owe me money.’ He’s 9 but he was 4 at the time.”
