WH: Back Channels an ‘Appropriate' Part of Diplomacy

White House press secretary Sean Spicer defended the notion of back channel communication with foreign nations at a Monday briefing, claiming that Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said back channel communications between the White House and foreign nations are appropriate “in general terms.”
