Melinda Brady said she was sorry for what her husband David Laffer did. He is accused of killing four people at a pharmacy in Medford on Long Island.
The wife of accused drugstore killer David Laffer had been doctor-shopping, visiting physician after physician to get multiple prescriptions for painkillers, according to sources familiar with the case.
Laffer's wife, Melinda Brady, had gone to more than 12 different doctors in recent months in search of prescriptions, sources told NBC New York. In each of those visits, prescriptions for highly addictive hydrocodone pills were issued in her name, sources said.
The doctors prescribed a modest number of pills. The doctors were not writing multiple prescriptions, said sources familiar with the investigation, which is in its early stages.
Investigators theorize Brady may have been allegedly doctor-shopping in an effort to mask and feed her addiction, sources said.
Investigators are also trying to determine how many visits Laffer himself had made to doctors in effort to collect prescriptions.
Laffer lost his job -- and health insurance -- a couple of weeks ago. This could help explain why he allegedly targeted that pharmacy on Father's Day, stealing more than 10,000 pills, police said.
