Train Carrying Oil Hits Truck in Rockland County

Plumes of smoke filled the sky in West Nyack. That’s where a train collided with a truck on the tracks. The impact had firefighters scrambling to prevent a disaster. Sheldon Dutes reports.

A train believed to be carrying crude oil hit a truck that was carrying cars in Rockland County, and both burst into flames, officials said.

Clarkstown Police say a homeowner nearby called 911 reporting the crash at about 11:40 a.m. Friday.

The 55-year-old driver of the truck was ejected. He is in serious but stable condition and is being treated for multiple fractures, authorities said.

Police say the train was heading north and struck the truck as it was crossing the tracks in an area with no crossing gates. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The truck was carrying five cars and one motorcycle; two of the cars were totaled and the rest have minor damage.
