Shuttle Enterprise Lands on Intrepid

Seeing a view of a space shuttle being moved to the Intrepid doesn’t happen often, and it’s the kind of thing that most people will remember for the rest of their lives. The space shuttle Enterprise has landed.

The prototype shuttle was lifted by crane onto the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum after a trip up the Hudson on a barge Wednesday.

Throngs of New Yorkers packed piers and other spots from Battery Park up to mid-Manhattan as others watched the spectacle from the Hudson waterfront in Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken.

"I'm never seen a space shuttle, and I'm looking at one," said Thomas Hoffler, 69.

Tara Gore took a break from work to watch the shuttle.

"Three's so much going on in New York that you can walk out of your office and see the space shuttle floating by," she said.

The spacecraft exhibit is expected to open to the public in mid-July.

Enterprise was originally scheduled to arrive at the Intrepid Tuesday but was delayed by unsettled weather.

It sustained some minor damage to its right wing while at sea Sunday when heavy winds caused a piece of the wingtip to graze a railroad bridge abutment in the water.

The shuttle first arrived in New York City atop a 747 jet earlier this spring.
