NJ Shoppers Warned About Armed Robber Lurking in Parking Lots

Wharton authorities are urging shoppers to be wary of strangers

Authorities in northern New Jersey are warning people to be alert for a gunman who is preying on shoppers.

Police say a man carrying a handgun demanded jewelry from a woman in a commercial shopping area's parking lot in Wharton in broad daylight on Tuesday.

Police say bystanders scared the man off and he fled in a Toyota Carolla.

Last week, police say a gunman approached another shopper and demanded jewelry in Rockaway Township.

Wharton police detective Bill Hamilton tells The Daily Record of Parsippany shoppers should be wary of strangers.

The robber is described as being between 25 and 35 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds with a slender build and short dark hair, according to the paper.

Anyone with information about either incident or who notices suspicious behavior in a commercial parking lot is asked to call detectives at (973)-366-0777 or (973)-625-4000, ext. 1059.
