Roosevelt Island Slowly Losing Its Call Boxes

and more from the blogs...

Get your morning scoop on the death of call boxes on Roosevelt Island, a farewell message to MJ, a video on the Gowanus Canal and a new flea market in Harlem in today's local blog round-up.

  • Roosevelt Island has more broken-down fire/police call boxes than working ones, reports a local blogger, as the city's dated emergency contact system slips slowly into yesterday.  As of yesterday morning "there are 9 boxes "temporarily out of order", 4 stumps, and only 7 working boxes," so bring your cell phones people. • A graffiti writer took to a Vista Media billboard on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint to memorialize Michael Jackson, writing, "I want you back," in red and gold cursive.   In related news, the New York Times released this wonderful graph detailing how Jackson's greatest hits did on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. • Freddy's Brooklyn Roundhouse released part two of their look at the Gowanus Canal Superfund nomination battle.  While the clip is up on YouTube now, concerned citizens can view it on BCAT television "over the next few weeks," with the first showing airing this Tuesday at 8:30 pm.  BCAT is Time Warner 34, Cablevision 67, RCN 82 and Verizon 42.  If you live in Manhattan, you can catch it on MNN this Thursday at 8:30 pm. • Harlem's got a new flea market opening July 11th that will run Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm at Morningside Avenue and 123rd Street.  The Harlem Market Hub promises to be "the new community gathering spot," where neighbors can sell and buy anything from used clothes to locally crafted jewelry and art.  [Uptown Flavor]
