Police have identified the man killed in an elevator accident in Washington Heights. Jose Fernandez was pinned to the ceiling of the elevator after it ascened as he was loading merchandise, police said.

A 43-year-old man who was crushed to death by a freight elevator in Manhattan has been identified by police.

Jose Fernandez, of 66 Pinhurst Avenue in Manhattan, died when the elevator started to ascend and pinned him to the ceiling, investigators said Sunday.

Fernandez had been loading merchandise into the elevator at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday at the La Reguera Dominicana store on West 182 Street in Washington Heights, police said.
