Man Arrested in NYPD Officer Assault: Police

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the weekend assault that sent an NYPD officer to the hospital with lacerations and other injuries, authorities say.

John Pica, 26, was taken into custody around 1:30 p.m. Monday. He was charged with assault on a police officer.

Police say the officer who was hurt and another officer stopped a group of three men and a woman in a lobby at the Gov. DeWitt Clinton Houses in East Harlem shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday on a suspected drug offense and one of the men knocked the first officer to the floor.

The officer was thrown down with such force that she lost some teeth and got cut, police had said.

The officer was treated at the hospital and released.

It wasn't immediately clear if Pica had an attorney.
