NYPD Officer Trips, Shoots Self in Leg During Bronx Traffic Stop

An NYPD officer accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to pull over a vehicle in the Bronx on Friday afternoon.

An NYPD officer was seriously injured when he shot himself in the leg while trying to pull over a vehicle during a narcotics traffic stop in the Bronx, police say.

The NYPD narcotics officer tripped during the traffic stop beneath the Simpson Street subway station in the Longwood neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. His weapon discharged and a bullet struck his leg.

The officer was taken to Lincoln Hospital in serious but stable condition. His injury was said to be non-life-threatening.

Crime scene tape was still up shortly before 5 p.m. as the NYPD investigated.

Westchester Avenue was closed between Fox Street and Southern Boulevard. Simpson Street and East 165th Street were also closed.
